Programming 2006 Explorer worked but then won't remote start

+1 vote
After going through program method 2, it starts but when I go to do another remote start it cycles through but will not start.  Have tried numerous times to program and got it accepted a few times only to find that an attempt to remote start does not work.

Hi Tim,

One quick note, if you got the RED LED to flash 10 times in the second part, do not attempt to program the unit over and over again. Ford / Mazda are particular in their methods of key programming.

  1. What model remote starter? datalink or hardwired?
  2. What is the 12 digit service number of the EVO?
  3. What LEDs turn on (on the EVO) when attempting to remote start?
  4. What does the truck do when attempting to remote start?

Crimestopper Cool Start RS00 G4.  Serv # 000102295197,DATALINK.  On attempted remote start, the EVO flicks off briefly then steady red, everything turns on in vehicle and Cool Start clicks twice and no start.  After a previous successful program (flashes 10 times) it started that once during the program mode but after that nothing.  It starts fine with key in ignition.  I previously attempted about 12 re-programings with similar results.

Oh, it's a Key-Override-ALL, i was assuming it was the EVO-ALL.

Remove the blue and white wires from the datalink connector, they are not required for this installation and may be causing you problems if the datalink protocols are not set right.

  • As a test, if you straight up ground the (-)ground-when-running of the Key-Override-All, then attempt remote starting, does the truck start?
  • The yellow wire of the Key-Override-All should be testing as Ignition when starting the truck with the key and by remote start (12V key on - during crank - and vehicle started). Is this how it's reacting?
  • Yellow wire again, you may need to connect it to the main ignition harness ignition if it's not already there.
Removed blue and white wires and straight ground, same thing, everything turns on but no start. Not sure how to test ignition, I tried an Ohm meter on yellow wire at ignition and saw no readings throught start, even with key.  Yellow wire is currently at ignition cylinder.

You need to be seeing somekind of action on the Yellow wire. This is an ignition sense wire and is required so that the unit can send out the key data.

Ignition acts as follows.

  • No key in barrel - 0V
  • Key in barrel - 0V
  • Key to accessory position (first position) - 0V
  • Key to ON/RUN position (second postion) - 12V
  • Key in crank/Start position - 12V
  • Vehicle started 12V

The reading will be the same when activating the remote starter.

These are all correct.  It will remote start but only if key is in ignition.
Is there anything else I can look at with this unit as it still won't bypass the PATS system??
Does it work with the key upside down in front of the barrel and not in the barrel?

I'm thinking maybe key sense would need to be also connected.
YES, it starts properly with the key in front of the barrel and not in.

So what i can understand, the Key-Override-All programmed, but the vehicles BCM did not accept it. This can be caused by:

  • The BCM already had to many keys programmed to it. Their is a limit of 4-8 keys depending vehicles.
  • The BCM is not allowing key programming, this can be reset at the dealer

Before goin to dealer to get the BCM reset for key programming, go over the online troubleshooting guide. I'd also recommend that if this your personal vehicle and you are not a professional installer, to bring the vehicle to an installation shop.

Is it worth connecting the KEY SENSE to see if that works?

No harm in trying, power it as a 2nd ignition if you want to test it out.

Here's a test i just thought of while eating my sandwhich...

You can wrap the plastic portion of your key in aluminium foil until you are unable to start the car with the key anymore. Then, ground the (-)ground-when-running of the Key-Override-All and try starting the car with you aluminium foiled key. (not by remote start)
